• Arrow pointing down tells you the exchange rate for your particular transaction.
• Arrow point upward is the slot where you will fill up if you what to buy or sell gold. 

Why you have to convert your money?  There are country where some goods are not available, but with the help this item will be very much available in the global market.  And you can buy your items there in gold.
